A Tale of Two Practices

Two things that bring me huge amounts of joy are basketball and participatory design. When I was introduced to Mariana Amatullo’s research regarding “design attitude” I was also watching long interviews between various sports show hosts and basketball player, Kevin Durant. He kept talking about the pick and roll in a particular interview and I asked my dad about it. From there my brain somehow connected the pick and roll, created by John Stockton and Carl Malone of the Utah Jazz and now composing 80% of all basketball plays, with the idea of “connecting multiple perspectives,” which Amatullo classifies as one aspect of “design attitude.” The more I thought about it the more connections I drew between the intricate team work skills required of basketball players in executing different plays and parts of a design attitude. Because of my affinity for Participatory design as opposed to just “design” I chose to add one more aspect of my own to Amatullo’s original 5. I added “working with users throughout the design process.” The result of all this is a sort of playbook for sports loving designers. For me it is a love story of two practices.
